About us
Dutch mattress manufacturers and importers have taken the initiative to promote mattress recycling. Koninklijke Auping, Beter Bed, Hilding Anders, Ikea, and Swiss Sense have joined forces in the Mattress Recycling Netherlands Foundation (Stichting Matras Recycling Nederland (MRN)).
The objective of this foundation is to recycle more mattresses, and to reduce the number of mattresses that are burnt as waste, as currently often happens. It does that by charging a waste management contribution. This waste management contribution is a statutory contribution that goes towards covering the costs involved in recycling mattresses. Mattress manufacturers, importers, and distributors all pay this waste management contribution. MRN uses these contributions to compensate waste collectors, such as local councils, waste and recycling facilities and retailers. This is done by compensating an annually increasing percentage of the costs involved.
MRN’s objectives have been approved by the government and declared legally binding on all parties involved. The order declaring this scheme binding by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has been published in the Dutch Government Gazette and is available for download here.
This also requires an implementing party, which is where the trade association for the interior and furniture industry, Royal CBM, comes in. They run the scheme on MRN’s behalf, ensuring that the scheme is implemented effectively and cost-efficiently and that the objectives are achieved.
Figures say more…
Mattress recycling is something that concerns us all. Whether you are a manufacturer or an importer, a local council or a waste collector, a retailer or a consumer, we have to work together to make sure more mattresses are given a second life. By recycling and reusing parts of mattresses. Many mattresses are currently burnt and that is a waste. A waste of energy, a waste of raw materials, and a waste of money.
We are only just starting and we still have a long way to go. But if we all pull together, we will achieve our goals. Can we count on you to join us?
