Manufacturer or importer
As a mattress manufacturer or importer, you are under an obligation as of 1 January 2022 to pay a waste management contribution for all mattresses sold from that date onwards. This includes single and double mattresses, toppers, and children’s and baby mattresses. (What do we mean by a mattress?)
Do I have to pay a waste management contribution?
The waste management contribution is payable by law to ensure a fair situation. If you register in the system after February 2022, the Mattress Recycling Netherlands (MRN) Foundation will remind you of this obligation. If you do not file any statements and do not pay the contribution, you may incur a fine.
You are legally required to pay this contribution if you introduce over 200 mattresses a year into the Dutch market. If you are a foreign manufacturer or importer who introduces over 200 mattresses a year into the Dutch market, you are also under an obligation to pay the waste management contribution. This is because when your mattresses are discarded, they will ultimately be recycled in the Netherlands, the costs of which you pay in advance through MRN.
Even if you expect to sell under 200 mattresses a year, you must still register on the portal. You will then submit a zero statement every quarter and specify in the final quarter how many mattresses you sold that year. If that is less than 200, you will not be billed for the waste management contribution.
How do I register with MRN?
In order to make it as easy as possible for you to log your mattress sales, we have set up the secure and user-friendly MRN portal. It is advisable to set up your accounts in a way that makes submitting statements on the MRN portal as easy as possible.
Based on data from the Chamber of Commerce, company details will be uploaded automatically. Once you have registered, filing your quarterly statements couldn’t be any easier. Based on the statements you file, you will receive an invoice with a 15-day payment term.
