Information on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme

In late 2021, it was announced that mattress manufacturers and importers will from 1 January 2022 be under an obligation to pay a waste management contribution for each mattress sold in the Netherlands. On 17 December 2021, the order declaring this scheme legally binding by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management was published in the Dutch Government Gazette. The order declaring the scheme legally binding on all parties in the industry is available for download here.

Seeing as it was not instantly clear what this Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme entailed, MRN first organised a webinar for manufacturers and retailers, and subsequently one for local councils and waste collectors.
These webinars featured two of the initiators and the persons responsible for implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. They explained how the new scheme works and how it came about. We also showed the portal where participants can file their quarterly statements of the number of mattresses sold, or submit a claim for compensation of specific costs incurred for the collection of mattresses for recycling. We also addressed the most frequently asked questions so far.

Webinar for manufacturers and retailers
The webinar for manufacturers and retailers was held on Monday 20 December 2021. If you were unable to attend the webinar live, you can watch it back (in Dutch). We have meanwhile formulated answers to all the questions that were asked during this webinar.

Webinar for local councils and collectors
On Tuesday 18 January 2022, a webinar was also held for local councils, waste and recycling facilities, and retailers who take back mattresses. You can watch that webinar (in Dutch). Click here for all the answers to the questions that were asked during this webinar.
