Waste management contribution

With effect from 1 January 2022, the Extended Producer Responsibility (UPV) for mattresses came into force. The 2023 waste management contribution is €3.25 (plus VAT). The MRN board has decided to increase the contribution for 2024 and also to make a distinction in the contribution per type of mattress.

This waste management contribution 2024 is as follows:

Single mattress €5.50
2-person mattress €6.50
1-person topper €5.50
2-person topper €6.50
Children’s baby mattress €4.50

The new contributions apply to all types of mattresses invoiced from 1 January 2023. Order and delivery dates are therefore secondary to the invoice date.

You will be charged the waste management contribution for the total number of mattresses for which you have invoiced someone or that you have introduced into the Dutch market after 1 January 2022.  In order to make it as easy as possible for you to log your mattress sales, we have set up the secure and user-friendly MRN portal.

PLEASE NOTE: you must file quarterly statements of the number of mattresses sold. Each statement must relate to the previous quarter. You can submit your declaration (if you have registered) from the first day of the new quarter (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October). You then have one calendar month to make your declaration.

For non-Dutch suppliers, we have drawn up a covenant (English version of the covenantGerman version of the covenant) that is always combined with an authorisation of the Dutch importer (English version of the authorisationGerman version of the authorisation). This makes the process easier and means that statements and payments go through the non-Dutch supplier. These signed documents can be sent to administratie@mrn.nl.

Compensation percentage 2024
The reimbursement for mattresses offered by the recycling companies RetourMatras and Matras Recycling Europe will amount to 60% in 2023 of the costs of renting a mattress container, transport to the recycling company and the processing costs charged by the recycling company. The MRN board has decided to increase the compensation for 2024 and based on the key figures and processing costs over the past year and a half, the compensation has been set at a fixed amount of € 540 per tonne.

This should encourage the collection of clean and dry mattresses so that even more mattresses are offered to the recyclers.

Filing the statement of the number of mattresses collected and taken to a recycler is easy and secure on the MRN portal. Click the button above to go to the online portal to submit a statement of the number of mattresses sold or the number of mattresses collected and taken to a recycler. You are advised to register now and organise your accounts in a way that makes it easy to generate and submit these statements.
